Teaching at the Graduate School in Guyana

The University of Guyana created a new Graduate School in the Faculty of Medical Sciences in 2024. Students can now study at this new school to obtain a Doctorate (PhD) in their field of choice. Dr. Mirza I. Rahman, M.D., M.P.H., President of the Guyanese Diaspora Charity (GDC), is serving as a senior faculty advisor to the students, and while in Guyana, he presented live to them at the Turkeyen campus on how to write their dissertations, various aspects related to ethical authorship, and principles for delivering good presentations.

In addition, Dr. Rahman discussed the topics chosen by the first group of students coming in to study for their doctorate. These six students will be doing their dissertations on a variety of topics ranging from laboratory medicine, the use of artificial intelligence in the detection and screening for glaucoma, and studying the appropriate dispensation and filling of prescriptions.

Subsequently, Dr. Rahman, who is an internationally recognized expert in pharmacovigilance, met with the second class of three students to present a seminar about pharmacovigilance. The safe use of drugs across Guyana is of paramount importance to the health and wellbeing of the nation, and is a priority for the Ministry of Health and its Food and Drug Department (FDD). Thus, this topic is one that the students are interested in as a potential area of research.
