Support for Doctors in Guyana
The Guyanese Diaspora Charity (GDC), in January 2025, provided a grant of over $2 Million GYD to the Guyana Family Medicine Residency via Dr. Tamica Daniels-Williamson, to support the residents and faculty there, as they are leading the country’s efforts to address the shortage of Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) in Guyana.
These resources will be used to purchase much needed medical equipment such as stethoscopes & pulse oximeters, along with memberships for nearly three dozen Family Physicians to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and for the core faculty to join the STFM (Official) Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM). Membership in the AAFP & STFM will afford these physicians access to a wealth of continuing medical education, professional networking opportunities, and materials that will serve to enhance their ability to provide high quality medical care. It will also allow the faculty to continue in their professional development, as they lead and teach the next generation of Family Physicians.
Shiva Rahman, the GDC Project Director who has been managing this work, and Dr. Mirza I. Rahman, M.D., M.P.H., the GDC President, both emphasized that later this year, they plan to deliver a number of computers and tablets to the residents and faculty for their use going forward.
